MEMORIAL SERVICE AT AMMANFORD.
|
23rd August 1917 Lieut. sIDNEY G. DAVIES. |
At Christian Temple, Ammanford, on Sunday last, a memorial service was held to the late Lieut. Sidney G. Davies, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Davies, Brynceri, Ammanford. Who fell in action leading his men in battle, and subsequently died of his wounds. The gallant young officer was 31 years of age, was born in Pontamman, near the Smithy, and was trained for the ministry, after being at Gwynfryn Academy and New College, London. His first and only pastorate was held with the Congregational churches at Stony Stratford and Whaddon, North Bucks., his ordination being attended by Mr. J. Lloyd, Hillside, and Mr. Jno. Evans, representing Christian Temple. So many of the younger members of his churches responded to the urgent call to serve King and country that he joined them, and enlisted as a private soldier. He was quickly promoted to the rank of sergeant, and being chosen for a commission, he spent his cadetship in Irelan. Early this year he was gazetted to the Royal Welsh Fusiliers, and just before going abroad he was married to Miss Daisy Jones, of Abergele. The memorial service was introduced by the Rev. George Jones, Rhosllanerchrugog, North Wales, and the Rev. Tegfan Davies preached. The “Dead March” in “Saul” was played on the organ by Mr. George Thomas, A. L. C. M. A good many letters of sympathy have been received by his father, and mother from deceased’s friends and college acquaintances, and also from the members of his two churches in Buckinghamshire. Two brothers of the deceased are in the Army, one Emlyn Davies, in training at a cadet college, and the elder brother, David Davies, in the R. A. M. C.
